Construction & Development Accountant
Reports to CFO
Description
The Construction & Development Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records for construction projects and development entities. This role includes job cost accounting, accounts payable and receivable, month-end close, and financial reporting while ensuring compliance with GAAP, internal controls and contract requirements. The position works primarily with the development team but will also include collaboration with the construction accounting team, project managers, operations and external partners to ensure timely and accurate financial information.
Duties & Responsibilities
Project & Job Cost Accounting:
  • Maintain accurate job cost records for construction and development projects, review with Project Management team monthly
  • Enter and post job cost transactions, including AP invoices, payroll, equipment and subcontract costs
  • Reconcile job cost to the general ledger and investigate variances
  • Assist with change order tracking and cost-to-complete analysis
Accounts Payable & Receivable:
  • Review and process vendor and subcontractor invoices, ensuring proper coding and approvals
  • Assist with preparation of loan draws
  • Monitor lien waivers, insurance certificates and contract compliance
  • Assist with pay application preparation and review
  • Process customer billings and monitor collections as needed
Financial Reporting & Close:
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly and year-end close processes
  • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations and supporting schedules
  • Assist with internal and external financial reporting
  • Support audits, tax filings and lender reporting requirements
Payroll & Compliance Support:
  • Review payroll allocations to ensure proper job and cost code distribution
  • Assist with prevailing wage, certified payroll and labor compliance as applicable
  • Support compliance with local, state and federal regulations
Systems & Process Improvement:
  • Utilize construction accounting systems to track job costs
  • Maintain accurate master data (jobs, cost codes, vendors, contracts)
  • Assist in improving accounting workflows, controls and reporting processes
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related construction accounting experience
  • 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably in construction or real estate development
  • Strong understanding of job cost accounting and construction financials
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, formulas)
  • Knowledge of GAAP and internal controls
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with CMiC, QuickBooks or similar construction ERP systems
  • Experience with percentage-of-completion accounting
  • Familiarity with lien laws, retainage and subcontractor compliance
